Biggest Surprise: Loyola Chicago to Final Four (1.22%)

Similar to last year's biggest surprise, Loyola's tournament run had about a 1-in-80 chance of happening. Here is a breakdown of the combination of upset wins and help needed to make this happen:

  1. Loyola mostly made its own luck, scoring upsets in every round. Odds of defeating their opponents were 46%, 30%, 44%, and 47%, respectively - no shocking upsets but less than a 3% chance of winning all four.
  2. At the start of the tournament, Loyola's odds of winning its sweet sixteen and elite eight matchups were much lower (30% and 24%) respectively. However, UMBC's upset of Virginia in the first round (the tournament's second biggest surprise, a 1-in-45 event), Nevada's upset of Cincinnati in the second round, and Kansas State's upset of Kentucky in the sweet sixteen resulted in Loyola getting games that were effectively coin flip likelihoods.
So while Loyola received some help, they helped themselves more with four straight upsets.

Number of Upsets

Are there more upsets in the NCAA tournament than if these were just regular season games? For this analysis, "upset" is defined by a team with less than 50% chance (as calculated below) winning its game (generally the same as the betting underdog) rather than based on committee seeding. (Counting by seeds, there would have been two more upsets than the numbers below report.)

  1. First Four: 1.7 predicted, 2 actual
  2. First Round: 8.1 predicted, 8 actual
  3. Second Round: 4.9 predicted, 5 actual
  4. Sweet Sixteen: 2.8 predicted, 4 actual
  5. Elite Eight: 1.5 predicted, 2 actual
  6. Final Four: 0.6 predicted, 0 actual
  7. Championship: 0.3 predicted, 0 actual
  8. Grand Total: 20.0 predicted, 21 actual
For this tournament, the number of upsets exceeded the expected number of upsets by 0.1, which translates to a 0.02-sigma result (51st percentile on a bell curve). For the last four tournaments combined, there were a total of 80 upsets, compared with an expected 79.8 upsets. The difference is 0.02 sigma, which falls at the 51st percentile. Over the four seasons, the number of upsets as a function of likelihood of the upset happening breaks down as follows.

Selection Notes The two obvious snubs this year were Louisville and Saint Mary's, both of whom had RPIs in the top 40 - ahead of Syracuse, UCLA, and Arizona State. Both were also ranked well ahead in my rankings (which give more emphasis on quality wins), as well as in my pairwise rankings (which are tuned based on previous committee selections). Nebraska also deserved a berth based on record and quality of competition, but their poor RPI ranking probably kept them out (though it is curious Arizona State's even worse RPI did not).

Looking at seedings, the top five seeds were close to historical precedents. Florida received a little bit of a gift with its #6 seed, as did Missouri with its #8 and Alabama with its #9. Kansas State and Providence were the outliers in the other direction.
