Request For: Pro and College Basketball
Request Title: Pick and Roll
Description Add pick and roll to basketball simulation.
Category: New Feature
Status: In Review (last updated Jul 27 14:44:22 2020
)
Priority: Under Discussion
Admin Notes Clearly there is some level of risk/reward. Here are some thoughts:
- If it works, the offense get an open shot, either from the handler or the screener
- If it doesn't work, at best (from the offense's standpoint) there is no advantage gained, and at worst there is a turnover, charge, or the handler is trapped.
.
In terms of defense options, this is less clear, especially as the primary defense is switching, something zone defenses should generally be more adept at.
.
I'd love to get other suggestions.
7/27 - still waiting for additional suggestions / comments

Comments
Coach LB: For in principle but would need more details on which strength/weakness it gives to a team using it.
Coach Shers: I like it. Additional comments - what attributes would be better for a pick and roll offense? int? ps?
Adnan Bislimovic (Mar 2 03:41:08 2020
): I am not convinced any more by this idea. To be honest I do not like the fact of risk/reward like for press and trap. My suggestion would be:
1. development of coaching styles...
2. all players will get traits but are able to play any coaching style...
3. traits are press, trap, pick&roll, etc pp - specialist...
4. traits give a bonus for used coaching style...
5. etc pp...
p.s. this overview is horrible---please change it Andy. I would like to have it 1:1 like in the comments box with line breaks etc pp...thank you in advance
David Smith (Mar 22 06:58:10 2020
): I'm not necessarily against this, it's just that I would like to know what we're getting into before I vote in favor.
Stephen Thompson (Mar 25 12:25:30 2020
): I think this would be a great addition to the simulation and super important for mirroring how real life games look. How would this be balanced though?
Specifically ... what would a good pick and roll offense look like from a player perspective? What is the downside to running it? How can a defense counter it?
-------
3/25: I think Andy's ideas around the risk/reward for the offense are correct. The one question is whether we need to have anything here related to player depth. After all, the vast majority of picks happen near the 3pt line. DEFENSIVELY ... the biggest question here is man-to-man defense, which the P&R is specially designed to frustrate. Would we need some sort of setting for "Willingness to switch assignments?" (Least/Most) ... if somebody is really intent on sticking with their assignments, they will be especially susceptible to the P&R. Other defenses, especially zone, have an easier time dealing with this.
Bill Edwards (May 5 11:53:00 2020
): I think this would be a great addition to the game and would put more emphasis on coaching decisions. We have been begging for more options to the sim, well here is a great one
Eric O (Aug 3 13:34:05 2020
): I wish I had a neutral vote, I guess I'm for this.
My thought is that P&R would reward ballhandlers with high Sc and high Ps, with catch and shoot 3pt opportunities for the players not involved? (Where most DEL basketball teams seem to not pay as much attention to Sc for perimeter players)
The key is to figure out how to include P&R where you don't turn it into what the crash the boards settings used to be. (A long, long, long time ago - back when we had to email templates in for our settings - you had 1-5 settings on crash the boards offense and crash the boards defense) Not selecting 5 was effectively suicide because you'd get crushed on the boards if you didn't, so Andy took that setting out.
