CVBL: Washington Spoilers for Memphis
Memphis collapsed today, allowing Washington to pull off a huge upset. The final score of 105-103 was less surprising than the Memphis performance, one of the worst in the last two seasons by the team. "They look like they're on vacation playing a pickup game," said one of the commentators of the game. "Do they even care that this game matters?" Indeed, Whitfield was the only Memphis player that did well.
After the game, Washington coach Bob was as stunned as the reporters. "Well, I didn't really think we had a chance. I figured we'd go in, put up the best opposition we could, and try to come out without getting pounded too badly. But after I saw the way they were playing, I knew we had a chance to pull it off. I told Gavagan that this was our chance to win the big one, and that he needed to rally the troops. That's exactly what he did, and we were able to come out on top."
Washington was led by Gavagan (31 points, 6 boards, 2 assists, a steal, 2 blocks), Gibson (30 points, 4 assists, a steal, a block), Huge (6 points, 3 steals, a block). Memphis was led by Whitfield (18 points, 14 boards, 2 assists, 2 blocks), Calloway (24 points, 5 boards, 2 assists, a steal, 2 blocks), Manly (32 points).
Washington are now 17-26. They hold at #5 in the Southeast and hold at #13 overall in the Eastern Conference. Memphis fall to 31-13 and 18-6 at home with today's loss. They hold at #1 in the Southwest and remain at #1 overall in the Western Conference.
