CVBL: Whitfield Heading to Detroit
After all the blockbuster free agents come and go, the teams are left to
sign whatever is remaining. Such was the case today, when the biggest deal
was Whitfield signing with Detroit. "This won't make the news outside the
local paper," said GM David Smith. "But we think Whitfield is a player who
can contribute, and we added him without killing our budget." Given some of
the other recent signings, that last bit is in fact newsworthy. The
contract is worth just $0.75 million over 1 year, and gains Detroit a solid
backup-quality player while leaving money for bigger signings in the
future.
