CVBL: Phoenix Upends New York
Despite being dominated all day, underdog Phoenix came away with the 115-109 upset of New York. "What a strange game," remarked Phoenix coach Bob afterwards. "New York were by far the better team today, but couldn't get the win. If I hadn't been keeping track of the score, I'd have thought we lost badly. But somehow we came out on top."
The sense of disbelief was apparent in the New York locker room afterwards. "We thought we did everything right," said star Crawford. "We executed our game plan, both on offense and defense, and did what we needed to do. But a few plays make or break the game, and those all went the wrong way. Just a demoralizing way to lose."
Phoenix was led by Mercer (9 points, 6 boards, 13 assists, 2 steals, 2 blocks), Celaya (31 points), Virtue (17 points, 3 assists, a steal, a block). New York was led by Crawford (22 points, 10 boards, 5 assists, a block), Powell (14 points, 9 boards, 0 assists, a block), Turner (17 points, a block).
Phoenix improve to 35-39 with this victory. They stay at #3 in the Pacific and improve to #9 overall in the Western Conference. New York stand at 52-21 and 28-8 at home. They remain at #1 in the Atlantic and hold at #2 overall in the Eastern Conference.
