CVBL: Phoenix Express Steamrolls Memphis 108-101
Whitfield continues to dominate the league and helped Phoenix post an expected win over Memphis, 108-101. The game was a solid team effort, but Whitfield - a favorite for post-season honors - was outstanding, completely overshadowing a great performance by Memphis key player, Smith.
Whitfield's coach, Bob, had nothing but praise for his star. "He's just special. It's something just to sit back and watch him do his thing. He certainly brings pride to Phoenix fans everywhere." Memphis coach Bob was concilliatory after the game as well. "When Whitfield is doing his thing, you just hope you can keep him under control. We didn't, though Smith certainly did his part. We really thought we could win this game, so the locker room is pretty quiet right now. We'll just have to turn our focus to next week."
Phoenix was led by Whitfield (14 points, 10 boards, 1 assists, 3 blocks), Miller (19 points, 2 steals, a block), Martinez (6 points, 8 assists, 2 steals). Memphis was led by Smith (11 points, 8 assists, 6 steals), Edwards (14 points, 12 boards, 2 assists, 2 blocks), Burker (9 points, 13 boards, 2 assists, a steal, a block).
Phoenix jump to 1-0. They advance to #1 in the Pacific and move up to #3 overall in the Western Conference. Memphis are now 0-1 and 0-1 at home. They fall to #5 in the Southwest and move down to #13 overall in the Western Conference.
