CVBL: Portland Snatches Win over Phoenix
Phoenix failed to make the most of their chances, coming up short 109-103 against Portland in today's contest. "They got a gift, no question in my mind," grumbled Phoenix coach Bob. "We outplayed them today, but just couldn't come up with the big plays when we were threatening to score. I just can't wait until the rematch; we'll show them who's really the best."
Portland coach Bob saw things a little differently. "I'm proud of our defensive effort today. They avoided giving up the big plays, and really came through in the key situations. Bob may blame his offense, but they'd have been able to score if they didn't have good opposition."
Portland was led by Smith (33 points, 14 assists, 4 steals), Jackson (22 points, 0 assists, 3 blocks), Vanderveer (6 points, 15 boards, 3 assists, 2 blocks). Phoenix was led by Celaya (27 points, 6 boards, 3 assists, a steal), Dupree (9 points, 16 boards, 2 assists, a block), Fripp (20 points, a steal, a block).
With today's win, Portland jump to 20-9. They stay at #1 in the Northwest and hold at #2 overall in the Western Conference. With the loss, Phoenix are now 15-15 and 10-9 at home. They remain at #3 in the Pacific and stay at #9 overall in the Western Conference.
